Following conversations at Zcon4 in Barcelona, the Zcash Basis (ZF) and Electrical Coin Co. (ECC) are excited to announce that we’ve agreed to maneuver core Zcash protocol work from zcashd to Zebra! 🦓🛡️

Zebra is a model new Zcash full node implementation written from the bottom up in Rust. Each the ECC and ZF groups imagine the fashionable structure and good engineering in Zebra will present a safer and extra environment friendly implementation of the Zcash core protocol.

Zebra was created by ZF with vital help and help from ECC builders, and depends on Zcash core libraries authored at ECC. Each organizations’ groups will collaborate to determine what performance must be added to Zebra to deal with the required use circumstances, and to encourage and help key customers emigrate to Zebra. Zcashd will proceed to be supported through the transition, which can take an undetermined period of time. ECC plans to proceed independently supporting core Zcash protocol upgrades, similar to its deliberate implementation of proof of stake, utilizing Zebra.

ECC engineers constructed the unique Zcash full node (“zcashd”) and have maintained and supported it by means of 69 releases and 6 community upgrades since 2016. This authentic implementation inherits the Bitcoin codebase and has grown difficult to keep up. Right now’s introduced transition will scale back the time it should take to deploy new options for Zcash, and permit extra engineering time towards pockets SDKs and a transition away from PoW consensus. For ECC, that is a part of its technique of “Decentralize Zcash and Focus ECC”. For ZF, this marks a major milestone for the Zebra undertaking.

As a part of this transition, Zooko on the Electrical Coin Firm has gifted a zebra swimsuit beforehand seen on stage at Zcon1, to Jack Gavigan of ZF.
